Steel basic concepts

Mechanical properties for steel according to use

Tensil Strength: the resistance that steel offers to fracture tension.

Elongation: is a measure of deformation that occurs before a material eventually breaks when subjected to a tensile load. As the latter is applied, an increase in length and a uniform reduction in cross-sectional area take place, while the material maintains a constant volume.

Hardness: is the ability of a material to resist deformation, which is determined by a standard test where the surface resistance to penetration is measured. The most commonly used hardness tests are defined by the shape or type of indent, the size, and the amount of load applied.

Yield point: is a material property and is the stress corresponding to the yield point at which the material begins to deform plastically.
