Get to know our special steels
Welcome! Today we would like to invite you to learn about our special low alloy machinery grade steels. These steels are known for their strength and durability and are used in a wide range of applications. We are going to explore three of our most popular steels: AISI 4140, AISI 9840 and AISI 8620.
AISI 4140
AISI 4140 is a steel with moderate hardenability that can be strengthened through the quenching and tempering process until reaching hardness values close to 50 HRC. In its pre-tempered (treated or fortified) state, it has an excellent blend of strength and toughness that facilitates its immediate use in machinery component applications.
Chemical composition of AISI 4140
%C: 0.38 – 0.43
%Mn: 0.75 – 1.00
%P: 0.035 max
%S: 0.040 max
%Yes: 0.15 – 0.35
%Cr: 0.80 – 1.10
%Mo: 0.15 – 0.25
Uses of AISI 4140
AISI 4140 is used in mechanical components of machinery in general, such as fastening or motion transmission elements (axles, rods, low speed gears, worm screws, chains, bolts, high resistance screws, machine bodies, bars torque, etc.). In addition, it is used as a support for molds or dies, plates and sacrificial components.
AISI 9840
AISI 9840 It is a low alloy or machinery grade steel with improved hardenability. In the annealed state, it can be hardened by quenching and tempering until reaching hardness values close to 50 HRC. In its pre-hardened state (treated or tempered), it offers an excellent combination of toughness and resistance, allowing its immediate use in machinery component applications.
Chemical composition of AISI 9840
%C: 0.38 – 0.43
%Mn: 0.70 – 0.90
%P: 0.040 max
%S: 0.040 max
%Yes: 0.20 – 0.35
%Cr: 0.70 – 0.90
%Mo: 0.20 – 0.30
%Ni: 0.85 – 1.15
Applications of AISI 9840
AISI 9840 is used in mechanical components of machinery in general, such as fixing or motion transmission parts (axles, rods, low speed gears, worm screws, chains, bolts, high resistance screws, machine bodies, bars torque, etc.).
AISI 8620
AISI 8620 is a steel with very good hot forgeability characteristics. It has adequate hardenability and reasonable machinability, around 61% compared to a 1112 steel.
Chemical composition of AISI 8620
%C: 0.18 – 0.23
%Mn: 0.70 – 0.90
%P: 0.035 max
%S: 0.040 max
%Yes: 0.15 – 0.35
%Cr: 0.40 – 0.60
%Mo: 0.15 – 0.35
%Ni: 0.40 – 0.70
Applications of AISI 8620
AISI 8620 is mainly used in situations where it is required to provide high surface resistance and combat wear caused by dynamic contact between metals. Some uses are aimed at the production of gears, crowns, worm screws, bushings, bearing races, among others.
Possibility of replacing special steels
All of our special low alloy machinery grade steels have potential substitutes that may offer superior characteristics depending on the specific needs of your application:
- Special Steels AISI 4140 It can be replaced by P20 + Ni (DIN 1.2738) for greater mechanical resistance (higher hardness and more uniformity from surface to center as a result of the use of nickel in its chemical composition).
- Special Steels AISI 9840 It can be replaced by P20 + Ni (DIN 1.2738) to obtain superior mechanical resistance (greater hardness and uniformity from the surface to the center, thanks to the incorporation of nickel in its chemical composition).
