Characteristics of AISI 1018
AISI 1018 In terms of mechanical properties, AISI 1018 exhibits tensile strength of approximately 440 MPa and a yield strength of 370 MPa at room temperature, with 15% elongation at 2.0″ and a 40% reduction in area. These values are for products with cold drawing execution, they are referential and not mandatory, according to the regulations.
SAE 1018 steel (SAE J414a) is used for its good machinability, which, although its machinability is 70% compared to 1212 AISI steel (referred to as 100%). In addition, its cold drawing process provides strain hardening.
Applications of AISI 1018
In terms of applications, AISI 1018 is used in the manufacture of mechanical parts that require toughness and surface hardness, such as screws, bushings and fastening elements. It can also replace 12L14 AISI steel in certain applications, as long as a high volume production due to lower machinability.
Hardening, AISI 1018 to increase its surface hardness, can be subjected to cementation or carbonitriding treatments. To increase its wear resistance and resistance to surface deformation.
