What is AISI 9840 T?
AISI 9840T They are low alloy steels that stand out for their remarkable mechanical properties and versatility in industrial applications. The precise chemical composition, which includes elements such as carbon, chromium, molybdenum and nickel, contributes to their exceptional performance. These steels are supplied in two conditions: annealed, with a hardness of approximately 190 HB, and pre-tempered, treated or tempered, with hardnesses between 248 and 301 HB.
Properties of AISI 9840 T
In terms of mechanical properties at room temperature, these steels exhibit tensile strength of 750 MPa, yield strength of 690 MPa, elongation of 13%, and supply hardness of approximately 322 HB (34 HRC), the values are estimated and apply to the quenched and tempered condition, are a general reference of the characteristics of these steels. In pre-hardened condition, it offers an excellent combination of toughness and strength, suitable for direct applications in machinery parts, the uniformity of hardness from the surface to the core, together with a greater resistance to mechanical fatigue compared to 4140 steel, positions these steels as preferred choices.
Applications of AISI 9840 T
The applications cover mechanical parts of machinery, effectively replacing carbon steels when greater mechanical resistance or hardness is required, the possibility of substitution includes P20 + Ni (DIN 1.2738) to achieve greater mechanical resistance. Supplied in an annealed state, it is possible to select the hardness of use and, with an appropriate quenching and tempering thermal process, reach values of around 50 HRC. As a complement to heat treatment, thermochemical processes are part of solutions to maximize the performance and durability of 9840, in various industrial applications. In the welding process, although not recommended, it can be carried out following specific precautions.
