When should I use steel beams in my projects?

Joists should be used in projects that demand high strength; this gives them an advantage over other materials such as concrete or wooden joists.

Thanks to its high resistance, this material has the ability to withstand large weight loads, but it is worth mentioning that it also brings lightness to your projects.

Its main function is to serve as a structural support element.

In the steel industry, we can find two types of beams: the IPR and the IPS.

IPS Beam

This material is I or H shaped and is made from hot-rolled steel; its flanges are more rounded, and its main use is to function as a support element for the manufacture of columns.

The IPS beam can be found in a wide variety of sizes and lengths of 6.10 m; its most common uses in industry are:

  • Construction: cellars, warehouses, buildings, roofs, bridges and towers.
  • Structural engineer: in the development of steel structures as a reinforcement and support element.
  • Transport: manufacturing of railway beams, bodies and wagons.
  • Residential: for the construction of houses and homes.
  • General: for the manufacture of shelving.

This material is also notable for:

  • Flexural and tensile strength.
  • Versatility is ideal for constructions of all types.
  • Being made of steel, it is recyclable and can be recycled up to 100%.
  • Its design, thanks to its shape, allows for quick assembly of columns and structures.
  • Being made of steel, its durability provides a long lifespan.
  • Maintenance: It requires little maintenance, which represents a cost saving.
  • It can be easily cut or joined with other materials.

IPR beam

This material, whether I or H shaped, differs from IPS in that it has more rectangular skates; another difference is that it withstands greater weight loads.

Its main use is to function as a support element in the construction of structures, beams, columns, among others.

The IPR beam can be found in a wide range of sizes and lengths of 12.2 m; its most common uses in industry are:

  • Construction: buildings, roofs, floors, shopping centers, warehouses, storage facilities and industrial buildings.
  • Bridges: thanks to its strength, it is the ideal material for the construction of large bridges.
  • Structural engineer: used for the manufacture of different structures for various industries.

This material is also notable for:

  • Resistance: Compared to other types of beams such as concrete or wood, it has greater resistance to earthquakes, hurricanes or tremors.
  • Load capacity: thanks to their shape they can support horizontal and vertical weight loads.
  • Ease of joining: like the IPS joist, it is a material that can be easily joined to other support elements.
  • Ease of assembly: thanks to its shape and design, it is a material that can be installed more quickly compared to wood or concrete.
  • Versatility: as we mentioned, this material can be used in a large number of projects.
  • Low maintenance: requires little care for its preservation.
  • Recyclable: It is a material that can be recycled up to 100%.
