Differences between hot and cold profiles

Steel is a variant of iron with carbon, to which other elements are added depending on its processing and industrial use. One of them is the cold or hot rolling process, which is very common for steel use, especially in cold and hot profiles.

These are commonly used in the industry for the construction of commercial structures due to their low cost, durability and easy handling.

Rolling is an industrial metal forming process in which a metallic material is introduced between one or more pairs of rollers to reduce its thickness and make it more uniform. Its objective is to enhance the mechanical properties, tensile strength, elastic limit, elongation. , among others

Types of steel profiles

hot profiles

At temperatures above 900 degrees, the steel undergoes a much easier forming process compared to cold rolled steel.

They are cheaper to manufacture as there are no pauses or delays in the process, so there is no need to reheat the steel.

When cooling takes place, hot rolled steel shrinks, making its final size and shape less predictable than cold rolled steel.

Its advantages include the possibility of using it to make large pieces without worrying about them being damaged. Due to these qualities, they are very appropriate for the construction and structural industry.

Cold profiles

These are processed at room temperature. Since steel is manufactured at a much lower temperature, there is no need to worry about the material changing volume and shape, suitable for uses where precise shapes and low tolerances are not required. This is why they are more expensive than hot rolled.

Cold rolled steel has a greater capacity for resistance and hardness and reduces its ductility, which is the ability to deform plastically in a sustainable manner without breaking.

Benefits and uses of hot and cold profiles

· They serve as reinforcement and provide greater durability to structures.

· It can be used in the manufacture of different parts, machinery and tools.

· It is a sustainable material since it can be recycled.

Hot rolled steel is mainly used in:

· Building structures

· Construction of metal buildings

· Rails for train tracks

· Heavy industry

· Anchors

· Tires

Cold rolled steel is mainly used in:

· Machinery parts

· Metal furniture

· Cabinets

· Tables and chairs

· Exhaust pipes

· Home appliances

· Shelves

Advantages of hot profiles:

· They allow better malleability and machinability.

· Higher performance.

· Allows handling of large pieces with a variety of shapes.

· Reduce costs.

· High quality surface finishes, smooth, uniform and shiny.

· Greater tension, resistance and elasticity.

· Better level of machinability.

· Longer duration.

Our Sales Manager @Gabriel Guerrero Martínez tells us that:

“Commercial steel profiles are manufactured from hot or cold rolled sheet, their design and functionality allow them to be used as a complement to metal structures, with the advantage of being able to adjust to the project and have easy handling. At Serviacero Comercial we have the widest range of profiles to support you in your projects.”
